Rothenberg - a half-timbered dream

Ah, Rothenberg...a perfectly preserved walled medieval town that's colorful and fun to explore.  We discovered this gem of a town in Germany in 2009 when we did a driving tour of the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road) from Bavaria to Wurzburg.  It looked identical to the last time we visited, which is a good thing!
We had a long 6 hour day of driving from Bruges.  Along the way, we exited the highway in southern Belgium looking for a nice field and settled on a quiet little church yard.  There was not a soul around in the village at lunch time and we were treated to a fun high pitched jingle on the church bells as we ate.
We checked into our little hotel after arriving in the early evening and then walked into town.  The kids found all sorts of fun things to spy as we waltzed down the quiet streets.  We found an outdoor restaurant just adjacent to the large church and had a very German meal of bratwurst, sauerkraut and flammkuchen for the kids.
After dinner we meandered in the fading light of dusk watching as the buildings began to glow under their floodlights.
We tried to re-create the picture we had taken 10 years ago at this famous part of the town with a couple of watchtowers and a cute house in the background.
The next morning we had breakfast at the hotel, checked out and began a morning of exploring the walls and ramparts.  The kids had a great time running to and fro.
We sampled some of the fine delicacies of the town: sneeballen.  They are essentially pie crusts folded over and over into a ball and covered with sugar, frosting, nuts, etc. Some of the fancy modern ones even had a crème filling...yum!
We also checked out the massive Kathe Wolfhart Christmas store extravaganza and toured their Christmas museum which explored traditions through the centuries.  It was really fascinating to see out tree decorating at evolved over the years.
And of course we squeezed in some souvenir shopping and added to our collection of half-timbered village houses for our Christmas display buying the watch tower and another fun house we had seen in town.
About lunch time we packed up and began our final leg to Garmisch to attend Tyler's work conference.  Until 2029 and our next scheduled visit to Rothenberg!
