Agrigento was one of the major city states of Sicily 2500 years ago. Agrigento sits atop a ridge line half way up a large hill about a mile from shore with a good view over the sea. We visited the day after Claire got sick on the drive down. She seemed to have gotten a little bit better and so we all drove up the hill and started exploring the ruins.
There were several large temples, ancient walls, and other ruins all stretched out along the ridgeline. Claire spent most of the day on top of Tyler's shoulders being lethargic. She wasn't actually getting better, but we didn't know it yet.
The temple in Agrigento is considered to be one of the best if not the best preserved Greek temple in the world. The reason it is so well preserved is that it was converted into a Christian church and was kept up through the years since it was an active place of worship.
It was a sunny and warm day and after lunch we figured the kids needed a nap so we dropped Laura off at the museum while the car parked and the kids slept. Afterwards, we drove down the coast a few miles to a white-sandy rock formation called La Scala Turchi. Claire played a little bit on a sandy playground while Callum and Tyler went snorkeling in the shallows.
Callum was very brave and swam out in the surf in about 6 feet of water and did very well. We saw some small fish and sea anemones. We then sat on the dry rocks and had a little picnic. We had dinner at a nice seafood restaurant along the main drag in the town we were staying in, San Leoni.
The next morning was Easter, so we read the Easter story from a Children's story book after breakfast. We explained it to Claire and how we all believed in Jesus and the story of his resurrection. Claire said that she wanted to ask Jesus into her heart as well. We explained for a few minutes what it meant and then prayed together. After the prayer was over, Claire looked upwards and pointed upwards and said, "Jesus, I believe in you and now you live in my heart!" Laura and I were so happy that Claire had shown interest in God and were astounded when she made her declaration. It was a wonderful day.
