A day at Downton Abbey

On a sunny spring day in April, we ventured 45 minutes south to Highclere Castle to see the estate where Downton Abbey is filmed.  The immaculate grounds and ornate palace like house belong to the Earl of Carnarvon.

Before Downton Abbey, the earl was famous for financing the expedition that unearthed King Tut's tomb after many unfruitful attempts.

We began by touring the gardens and wandering around the expansive lawn.  At some point Tyler lost his glasses and only had his sunglasses which he realized as we all were about to enter the Egyptian exhibit.  So, he painstakingly retraced his steps to find nothing (he eventually collected them at the ticket office as we were leaving since some good Samaritan had dropped them off after apparently stepping on them.

We then had tea on the lawn before making the last 30 minutes of our entry time window to see the house.  It was a little bit surreal to be in this house that looked exactly like the Downton Abbey series - hardly a piece of furniture or décor was different.  Unfortunately, we couldn't take any pictures inside. 😢

Afterwards we wandered the gardens a few minutes more while Laura perused the gift shop.  It was a great day trip and a bucket list item checked off for Laura!
